Ways to jazz up those heels

Brilliant…. I will be trying this soon!!!!!

Dancing in my heels

You don’t need to be a designer or shoemaker to get create your own fashion. DIY fashion is increasing in popularity and it’s addictive. Bloggers Shini Park and Kit Lee have recently also published a book titled Adorn: 25 stylish DIY fashion projects.

I’ve been spending hours on some amazing sites and have discovered some great DIY fashion tutorials. While I doubt I’ll be giving DIY a go anytime soon (thanks to my inability to use glue without ruining everything around me), I thought it would be great to share some of these with our readers.

My first piece in this series is off course DIY shoes. It doesn’t matter whether your shoes are out of fashion or looking a tad bit worn. There are ways that you can re-add the sparkle to them. Here are a list of ways that you can jazz them up again:

Red Lace Chronicles…..cont.

I feel like I’m never going to be done with this dress. The lace has to be cut and sewn like an applique…did I mention it has to be done by hand???

I love my job. Love my clients. Love my life.

This shit cray.

I’ve been working on it all day, fixing errors, pinning, fitting, repinning and now stitching.

In the end its going to be so beautiful!

P.s. I’m on IG if you want to see updated videos of the process AND other things I’m up to!

Seam Ripping Learning Lessons

Man fixing this dress has enlightened me quite a bit.

I have learned that I need to be a part of each and every process. I can’t assume that anyone knows how to do things the way I want them.

I never considered whether or not my sewers knew how to sew an invisible zipper, which is why they were having to many issues with this dress.

More importantly its my fault, my company, my brand and out combine wasted time since I have to seam rip the whole thing out.

sigh I think. Need to teach technique classes before singing people up, or have them provide a sewing sample book.

Have any of you ran into this problem?

I think part of it is just me assuming that everyone is on the same level I am, without taking the time to truly asses skill level. Same goes with marketing interns. I demand excellence at all times. Perhaps I’m asking too much? I don’t know.

Red Lace Dress Challenge

Its in process but has to be taken apart. Things I can’t stand, uneven lines, uncentered points… And ish that don’t work right.

Taking everything off and starting over. It will be beautiful in the end though!!

Needs to look like the bottom dress. CROSS YOUR FINGERS!!

My Idea for Panorama:

It would be impossible for me to explain where I am going without telling you where my thoughts and dreams linger.

I am to my core… an independent designer. I believe in community. I believe in building a future together, and I believe in following dreams without selling out. I never dream of being rich and famous (thought, don’t get me wrong… I wont rule it out) I just want to be happy. That might beg you to ask… well what makes you happy? I am the happiest when I am designing clothing for women that fits amazingly. I love to see how my dresses light up the faces of the wears and boost their confidence. Women with confidence can and WILL change the world. I will always do what I can to help them get there.. obviously through amazing dresses.

I have been thinking for a while about HOW I could partner with my local community here in Houston. It’s a large city, with lots of people and no one seems to be concerned with a local fashion designer trying to change her community. Then I remembered this fantastic woman I had met, Maria Cummings. I met her through a previous job, and I can tell you that we are soul sisters. Somehow her soul just knows when mine is having a hard time digesting new information, dealing with the daily stressors of being an independent business owner, the silliness of interns and she really understands my creative mind. I am, in fact… my own worst nightmare. She gets it, she get’s me.. and she keeps pushing me forward. I am so very lucky to have her.

A few months back she was mentioning to me that she was finally going to start a non-profit. For years this woman has been in the trenches digging and begging for help. She works side by side with people who have fallen on to hard times, or those coming out of bad situations. She helps find them a place to live through Start of Hope, helps get their furniture through the furniture bank, and helps get them clothing through donated clothing from her clients. For a more than just a people looking to go back to school, she has even paid out of pocket for meningitis shots. She stands by the philosophy, “Everyone deserves a second chance”. She pours her heart and soul into each person, for as they grown in live, she growth them them.. step by step.

Now, I have fallen on a hard time MANY times… I am young.. I am inexperienced in some ways, and overly experienced in others. I react quickly to certain things and I have to pay the price for my darting tongue often.  Maria has been a life coach to me for over the past year, and I owe it to her, and to my community to give back.

There is where the upcoming show comes into play.

She has allowed me to go through the bags of clothing  and to choose whatever I want to create new items. For me this means that I am not spending out of pocket expenses on material, with no guarantee that it will even sell (which means I’m negative in my business), I am also forced to get back to my roots, and above all else.. I have to learn to be creative again.

Repurposed, recycled and upcycled clothing can be a challenge. It’s difficult to envision what a leather jacket can be turned into.. or even a hospital gown. However for me.. it’s a transformation… a rebirth, and it’s exactly what I need.

I am going through my own transformation, and the show will be a symbol of what I am going through. Taking something old and worn… then breathing new life into it.

I plan to show the clothing on the runway with before pictures above the models walking down the runway. I am working with a local music artists to have her perform during the show while the models walk. We will be playing a video before the show to show where Amazing Grace Charities as come, as well as Ashton Miyako Designs.

I’m excited… it’s emotional.. and I just want to pour my heart and soul in to it.

I hope that you will come see the show. If you do, you will get a chance to meet me (if you haven’t already) and to also meet Maria and her business assistant and partner, Matthew. They are both amazing people!

If you can’t make it, but you are interested in supporting Amazing Grace Charities, here is how you can!

Happy Fathers Day to EVERYONE

When I think of Fathers day… I don’t always think of Dad.

I grew up with my father not a part of my life. Not necessarily because he didn’t want to be, but because my mother moved us to Alaska and then California.

During this time I grew up not with one father, but many fathers. I’ve had many mentors in my life that have help shape who I am as a person. Here are just a few:

To my mother – Happy Fathers Day. You had to fill both roles and I know it wasn’t easy. I know that being a single mom is not easy for anyone and you tried the best that you could. We’ve had up’s and down’s and I am proud that you have grown as a person, that you are in a successful relationship and that you are continually learning to love unconditionally.

To Eric, Judy and Chris – You 3 are the best thing that could have ever happened to my life. I cannot express how much I truly care for each of you. You have been there every step of the way and for that I am truly grateful.

To Matt, the love of my life – I love the way you love our dog. I’ve seen you with your cousins children and you’ve proven to me many times over how much of an amazing father you will be. I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with you. You are my dream come true. P.S. Happy 2yr to baby. We made it! Here’s to 50 more!

To Bell, Amber, Jason, Ana, Ryan, Robyn, Wayne, Peg, Lisa, Reid, Bob, Mike, Trish, Louise, and Grandpa and to the rest of Matt’s family that I might have missed – Thank you for showing me the true values of family. Thank you for supporting me in all that I do, and for accepting me not only into your family, but a part of your lives as well. I love you all.

Thank you to my sister, her hubby and her kids. Thank you for truly loving me through thick and thin. Thank you for reaching out without cause or reason. Thank you for taking notice of my accomplishments in life and for picking me up off the ground when I have fallen.

Thank you to my Utah family!- you accepted me as family before I was ready to accept myself. It’s as if I have known you all my whole life. Thank you for giving back to me when I couldn’t give back to myself. Thank you for continually checking up on me, you always hit at just the right time.

Thank you to Maria, Matthew and Amazing Grace Charities for helping to inspire me every day. For helping me find a way to give back to my community and for reminding me that selfless and selfish sometimes have to go hand in hand. Know when to help others, know when to ask for help, and know when you need to set something down and come back later. God is so good.

To all of my kumu’s, aunties, hula sisters/brothers, and to all of our supporters – thank you sooooo much. You’ve given me a huge reason to make Houston my home and I couldn’t be happier. I’m so lucky to have met you all, you are the highlight of my week.

Lastly, my father, my step mother, my step sisters, my aunties and my grandparents from another mother. Plus my uncle John and his wife Cris- Thank you for helping me to look within myself to decide what was best for me. Thank you for continually challenging me to become a better person for not only myself, but my relationships with others and my customers. I owe my sincere determination to be on top to all of you. Thank you for always pushing me. I am forever grateful.

Here’s to you single moms , single dads, foster parents, adoptive parents, god parents, and to anyone who has ever influenced a child in a positive way. It takes a village to raise a child, and you are shaping the future. Keep on keepin on. You are appreciated in every way.

I’m sure I have missed so many people, I’m so sorry. Know that you do mean a ton to me… But typing on my phone has me drawing a blank.

Happy Fathers Day To Everyone!
